Speaker:

Abstract

I describe the analysis of the Standard Model of particle physics that has led a generation to believe that there is (accessible) physics beyond it. I also introduce the idea of the multiverse that has shaken that belief. Then I present the impact data from the Large Hadron Collider has had, and will have, on both. I will then argue that the natural response to such a situation in physics is to make a feature-length documentary film for the general public with this setup generating the narrative. Well… that's what I decided to do anyway. This talk is a blend of the physics that has led to a revolution, and the components required to capture it on film. The film-making team, including Oscar-winning editor Walter Murch, has world-premiered the movie at the Sheffield DocFest and will release it in theaters next spring. The movie is Particle Fever.
