With the discovery of a Higgs like scalar in 2012 at the LHC, and the lack of discovery of beyond the Standard Model states with masses proximate to the electroweak scale, it is clear that new theoretical approaches to interpreting the ever growing LHC data set are of very great interest. In this talk, we argue the most promising approach going forward to interpret the data is the the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). This theoretical framework has been emerging since the early 1980's, but recent experimental and theoretical results have rocketed forward the development of this theoretical framework. We will review the many advances that have been made in the SMEFT framework in recent years and the relation of this powerful theoretical formalism to alternative approaches also being developed, the Higgs Effective Field theory (HEFT) and the pseudo-observable framework.
