Meeting of The UK Fluids Network Special Interest Group on “Non-Newtonian Fluid Mechanics”

Event description

In 2016, EPSRC set up The UK Fluids Network -- a cross-institutional collaboration of researchers from various disciplines working on various aspect of physics of fluids. The Networks stems from the realisation that while a lot of cutting-edge fluid-dynamics-related research being performed in the UK, it is usually embedded in various unrelated disciplines, hindering academic and industrial knowledge transfer. The aims of the Network are, therefore, to develop cross-institution bottom-up research programs and proposals, and to act as a broker between UK academics and industry (see https://fluids.ac.uk).

The Network is structured as a series of Special Interest Groups (SIG's) that represent Network's aims in a particular field. One of the SIGs, "Non- Newtonian Fluid Mechanics" organised by Prof. R. Poole (University of Liverpool) and Dr. A. Morozov (University of Edinburgh), brings together analytical and numerical theorists, experimentalists, and industrial researchers working on various aspects of physics of complex fluids. The programme for this SIG involves 6 meetings and focussed sessions over the span of the Network (Sep 2016 - Aug 2019).

The second meeting of the SIG "Non-Newtonian Fluid Mechanics" will be held in Edinburgh, on the 11th and 12th of January 2018. The focus of the meeting are theoretical, numerical, experimental, and industrial aspects of yield-stress fluids. In the spirit of the Network, the meeting will comprise 4 invited talked mixed with discussion sessions. The main purpose of these sessions is to come up with new grand challenges in physics of complex fluids and identify various groups of academics and industrial researchers that would apply together for EPSRC funding.

Location

  • The meeting will take place in the James Clerk Maxwell Building, Kings Buildings. 15 minutes by bus from city centre.
  • Edinburgh is well served by trains and planes.
